Mountains, lakes, rivers, oceans, forests,... we have beautiful and very diverse nature in Europe. But with our modern way of life we human beings don't use our natural resources in a sustainable way, we pollute our environment severely. Environmental issues are omnipresent in the media nowadays.
We hear about climate change, nitrate in our groundwater and huge amounts of plastic in our oceans, to name a few of the related issues. Sometimes students feel overwhelmed and frightened by all the scenarios of a disastrous future. And they feel helpless as of what they can do when confronted with
such big topics and contexts. Sustainability is a key word in new school curricula, the importance of the subject is obvious to educational stakeholders, but very little time is given to schools and teachers to actually work on the topic.
Our aim is to break down this very important topic, to enable students to understand the contexts and most of all to learn about activities they themselves can do (on a local level) in order to minimize their own negative effects on nature and to sensitize others for the topic and teach others about what they
can do.
But our environment does not stop in front of our door, everything is connected and the (treatment of the) environment in other parts of the world also has impacts on our future. By starting an international project with European partners we learn about coherences between our acting and the impacts this might have elsewhere and we will profit and learn from ideas and activities our partners have done and do.
The environmental issue is relevant for every single one of our students, families and fellow citizens, it is a vital topic for the future and the project helps our students and our school communities to feel responsible for nature and enables them to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
